Get Alerts When your Blog hits first in the Google

If your web pages do not appear on the first page of Google, your presence is almost invisible on the Internet because most users are too lazy to scroll beyond the front pages.

While there are enough good websites (see the Search & SEO section) telling you how to improve search rankings, Exact Factor is a tool that helps you monitor these rankings via email alerts.

You supply the address of your website and the search keywords that you are looking to rank for - Exact factor will send an email alert when pages from your site hit the front page of Google, Yahoo or Windows Live Search.

You may either select the default .com (like google.com) for determining search rankings or choose country specific domains (like google.co.in) for sort-of local search.

There’s more. You can type the address of a competing website and track if that site ever manages to beat your position in search engines. The service is free with a limit of 50 keywords per site.

Hope this was useful!

Windows 7 tightens security for USB drives

In the wake of the Conficker worm spreading via removable storage devices among other methods, Microsoft said on Tuesday it is making a change to the way Windows 7 handles USB drives.

As a result of the change, most USB drives will not be able to automatically launch a program using a Windows feature known as AutoRun, Microsoft said in a post on its Security Research & Defense Blog.

So, if an infected USB drive is inserted on a machine then the AutoRun task will not be displayed, Microsoft said.

Fixed removable media, such as CDs and DVDs will still be able to use AutoRun. Also, some specialized "smart" USB flash drives such as those containing U3 software will still be able to appear as DVD drives, effectively allowing them to also use AutoRun, Microsoft cautioned.

The change will show up in the release candidate version of Windows 7 that is being released to developers this week and publicly on May 5.

Microsoft said it is planning on making the change available on Windows Vista and Windows XP, as well.

In February, Microsoft released an update for Windows AutoRun that allows people to selectively disable the AutoRun functionality for drives on a system or network to provide more security. The update addressed an issue that prevented the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry key from functioning as expected. Disabling AutoRun functionality can help prevent the execution of arbitrary code when a removable storage device is used.

The AutoRun functionality has been blamed for malware that has infected USB thumb drives, leading to a temporary ban on their use at the U.S. Defense Department, and digital photo frames, among other storage types.

Microsoft detailed additional security features in Windows 7 during the RSA security conference last week.

Before the change, the malware is leveraging AutoRun (box in red) to confuse the user.
(Credit: Microsoft)

After the change, AutoRun will no longer automatically launch when most USB drives are attached, so the AutoPlay options are safe.

Hope we can prevent the autorun virus from this.

I was reading a recent comment on the post and felt that I should also be sharing with you some other, easy ways for creating Favicons.

Favicon can be easily said as, the image icon that you obtain for your blog, for example by default all the favicon for bloggers will be the same.

For Example : http://kiruba-for-you.blogspot.com/favicon.ico This link stores the default blogger icon, you can customize your own favicon with Photoshop, Don’t get panic, the steps for creating the Icon in clearly mentioned below.

Primarily there are two ways you can create a Favicon:
  1. By using any online service
  2. By using a desktop software

Online Services

Here is the list of some free and easy to use online services by which you can create your own Favicon.

  • Antifavicon [Pretty useful for only text Favicons]
  • Degraeve [Hybrid support : image + pixel grid]
  • Dynamic Drive [Supports edits on uploaded image]
  • Favikon [Allows direct image conversion to Favicon]
  • Genfavicon [Allows image conversion to Favicon including image upload from a url]

Desktop Applications

You can also try creating Favicons by using various licensed / free desktop applications. Here are a few:

  • Gimp
  • Photoshop

Step 1: Open the image in Photoshop

2

Step 2: Crop it into a square using ‘Crop’ tool

3

Step3: Change image size to 16*16 pixels from Image > Image Size

Windows 7 Aero Themes

While Microsoft's attempts to streamline and simplify the Windows 7 user interface are arguably the number one focus for this new Windows version, personalization isn't far behind. According to the software giant, a huge percentage of Windows users customize their PC desktop with a picture, using either a personal photo or something that they've downloaded from the Web. And users are clamoring for more ways in which to customize the PC experience and make it their own. In Windows 7, Microsoft offers a new desktop customization features that addresses these needs. It's called Aero Themes.

Working with Aero Themes

Aero Themes are accessed via the new Personalization option on the context menu that appears when you right-click the Windows desktop. (You can also launch this control panel by typing Personalization in Start Menu Search.)

win7_rc_review_14

You configure Styles via the Personalization control panel.

As you can see, a stock Windows 7 install includes whatever Aero Themes you've created (or are currently using), several built-in Aero Themes, and several Basic and High Contrast Themes, the latter of which includes Styles based around the Windows 7 Basic and Windows Classic themes and four high contrast themes.

The following Aero Themes are available in Windows 7.

Windows 7. The default Windows 7 Aero Theme utilizes the default Sky (clear, light bluish) glass color, the Windows Default sound scheme, and no screensaver. This is a great Theme from which to create your own Theme. The background image used in the Beta and Release Candidate builds is, of course, a beta fish. But this will change by the final release to a new image that is unique to Windows 7.

win7_aero_themes_01

The Windows 7 Aero Theme. (Pre-release version.)

Architecture. This Aero Theme features a desktop slideshow of six alternating architectural images, the Twilight (deep blue) glass color, the Cityscape sound scheme, and no screensaver.

Characters. This Aero Theme features a desktop slideshow of six alternating whimsical cartoon-type images, the Taupe (light pink) glass color, the Characters sound scheme, and no screensaver.

Landscapes. This Aero Theme features a desktop slideshow of six alternating landscape images, the Slate (dusty brown) glass color, the Landscape sound scheme, and no screensaver.

Nature. This Aero Theme features a desktop slideshow of six alternating plant- and leaf-based images, the Lavender (bright pink) glass color, the Garden sound scheme, and no screensaver.

Scenes. This Aero Theme features a desktop slideshow of six alternating artistic images, the Violet (soft purple) glass color, the Quirky sound scheme, and no screensaver.

Theme for [your region]. This Aero Theme is customized for the region in which you live. So in my case, it is customized for the United States. It features a desktop slideshow of six alternating country- or region-specific images, a custom glass color (medium tan for the US), a custom sound scheme (Delta for the US), and no screensaver.

Should you go for Adsense ? My Personal Experience

Google is a big company who makes money with Adwords. But Adwords is backed by a program called Adsense. I won't teach you about Adsense here, I just want to burst some myths about Adsense for newcomers.

Adsense is a lucrative way to make money online if you have great content and/or a lot of traffic but you may not know how to get started with Adsense. For one experiment I made in the past, I chose only the traffic strategy (I named it the "Massive Attack" strategy of the Adsense Clueless Wanabee) because I didn't want to commit myself to write unique lengthy articles of my own, not knowing where I was going. The result was not bad for a start - about 80$ per month for a few dozen thousands impressions - but with bad quality content (copy and paste type of my work notes) so that at any time I was risking to be kicked off from the SERPs (Search Engine Research Positions) by a new Google's algorithm.

Now that I know that Google adsense can work, my advice would be to write good content in a niche that you master with high paying keywords and not too much competition. For example the make money online is crowded with billions of pages and I guess mylotnovice will never make a dime with adsense, but that's not the reason why I did create this blog in the first place :).

Last but not least, if you want to start easily with adsense, don't do it with Blogger but with Hubpages, an adsense revenue sharing community which will optimize the ads placement for you. For example, this hub on Rolex Watches is making about 100$ per month according to Hubpages Founder.

Will Google harm your computer !?

when you use Google you will find some warning message like “ This site may harm your computer” when opening a web page.

Google says…

We want our users to feel safe when they search the web, and we’re continuously working to identify dangerous sites and increase protection for our users. This warning message appears with search results we’ve identified as sites that may install malicious software on your computer:

google-bug

I have rounded the search about the Google.

If you click the title of the result, you’ll be shown the following warning rather than being taken immediately to the webpage in question:google-bug-warning

Don’t worry and Don’t take their word for it. Go ahead.  Google at your own risk.

What is Googleplex?

Google_Campus

The Googleplex is the corporate headquarters complex of Google, Inc., located at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, Santa Clara County, California, near San Jose. The name Googleplex is a play on words, being a portmanteau of Google and complex, and a reference to googolplex, the name given to the large number 10googol.  (search:wikipedia.org)

Windows 7 RC build 7077?

The Windows 7 Release Candidate is complete. It’s currently being unofficially distributed on BitTorrent networks, and the official release has begun as well. Technical beta testers, MSDN/TechNet subscribers, and the general public (in that order) will be allowed access to Microsoft-run download servers in waves between now and May 5.

I have a copy of the RC code, obtained through official channels, and I’m spending this weekend in a flurry of upgrades and clean installs. I’ll be sharing details and lessons learned from my experience over the next few days and weeks, mostly at ZDNet.

rc1-media-small

Based on my initial experience, though, I think I can solve one mystery. It’s not one of the great riddles of the ages, but I’ve been curious to know which of the 70xx builds wound up being declared the official release candidate and recompiled into build 7100. I think the answer is 7077.

I found the best clue is in the Sources folder on the installation media. The file Cversion.ini determines whether upgrades are allowed or blocked from the current build. The settings in the official release are as follows:

[HostBuild]
MinClient=7077.0
MinServer=7000.0

If you try to use this media to upgrade a system running the December Beta release (build 7000), you’ll be blocked unless you edit this file. You’ll also be blocked if you try to upgrade from most of the interim builds (7022, 7048, 7057, 7068) that found their way onto BitTorrent sites in the past few months.

But if you’ve been running build 7077 or later, the upgrade will complete without any problems. I can’t say for sure, but that suggests to me that the underlying code is identical and that the only change is the date stamp and the build number.

Update: Several Microsoft insiders have made it pretty clear to me that there were indeed significant “iterations” in the code base between 7077 (April 4) and 7100 (April 22). Thanks for the correction.

If you’re already running 7077, you don’t need to jump through any hoops to upgrade to the RC when it’s available. You can run Setup directly over that installation and it will work just fine

Windows 7 has 'XP mode'

Microsoft is trying to make it easier to sway users of Windows XP onto the latest version of its operating system.

For some time now, the company has been quietly building a "Windows XP mode" that uses virtualization to allow Windows 7 to easily run applications designed for Windows XP. According to sources familiar with the product, the application compatibility mode 7 is built on the Virtual PC technology that Microsoft acquired in 2003, when it scooped up the assets of Connecter.

By adding the compatibility mode, Microsoft is aiming to address one of the key shortcomings of Windows Vista: its compatibility issues with software designed for Windows XP and earlier versions of the operating system.

Details of the Windows XP mode, previously known as Virtual Windows XP, were first published earlier Friday by the Windows Super Site blog.

The technology has not been part of the beta version of Windows 7 or previously disclosed by Microsoft, but is expected to be released alongside the upcoming release candidate version. Microsoft said on Friday that it will release it to developers next week and publicly starting May 5.

According to the Super Site report, written by bloggers Paul Thurrott and Rafael Rivera, the XP mode won't come in the box with Windows 7, but will be made available as a free download for those who buy the professional, enterprise, or "ultimate" versions of Windows 7. The site also has some screenshots of the mode in action.

There had been rumors of a secret user interface, but until Friday, no mention of the XP mode.

Update: Late on Friday, Microsoft confirmed XP Mode in a blog posting.

"Windows XP Mode is specifically designed to help small businesses move to Windows 7," Microsoft's Scott Wood gate said in the blog. "Windows XP Mode provides you with the flexibility to run many older productivity applications on a Windows 7 based PC."

According to the post, "all you need to do is to install suitable applications directly in Windows XP Mode which is a virtual Windows XP environment running under Windows Virtual PC. The applications will be published to the Windows 7 desktop and then you can run them directly from Windows 7."

Microsoft said it "will be soon releasing the beta of Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate."

Microsoft Windows 7 “SuperBar”

win7superbar

I’m glad at least someone is paying attention to the French. A couple of days ago Anthony Cook of blogofcookie.com noticed some interesting screenshots from a presentation at the Microsoft France training event “TechDays 09” of what appeared to be a different user-interface for Windows 7. However contrary to his speculation that this was to be the speculated theme refresh under wraps for Windows 7, it is in fact a screenshot of an old “superbar” prototype.

In this version of the superbar (presumably by default) labels are still enabled. Unlike the labels in the version of Windows 7 today which just feature an application window’s title in a single line, it appears to be a multi-line label separating the name of the application and a subtitle indicating the contents of the current window.

This is an interesting concept because still to this day, the label that appears in the taskbar is a duplicate of the title of the Window it represents, not the application. For example, your Windows Live Messenger windows are labeled by the username of your conversations, not “Windows Live Messenger”.

Obviously Microsoft has since dropped this idea, but it’s worth noting this may have provided an interesting method for applications to provide always-visible short snippets of information on the taskbar. For example, a Twitter application could have indicated in the subtitle “4 unread, 3 replies”, and Outlook “3 unread messages”. Of course, the cost of this idea would adds significant size to the taskbar buttons if they are to be wide enough to relay any useful information.

On a similar topic, personally I have found in Windows 7 the default view of the superbar very difficult to adjust to (large icons, no labels). How is everyone else finding the superbar?

Microsoft Advaertise

The other day i was going through the Microsoft research papers the latest one being "The paper based text messaging" system. This is now just a paper proposed in Nov 2008 but for all you know it might get implemented in future. What is this paper based text messaging system about? SMS and MMS are the popular means of communication today among the youngsters. What about the old? They don’t generally prefer SMS ing for communication. So there is a communication barrier existing. To overcome this shortcoming The paper based text messaging was proposed. The user interface being in the form of paper is very simple to send and receive messages and is therefore useful to the old and young alike.

Microsoft's Recent Technologies

Every Wednesday night, AXN channel telecasts a show called Crime Scene Investigation.

CSI implements the cutting edge technologies in its scripts to give a fabulous effect to their viewers. The producer of CSI, Anthony E. Zuiker has recently planned to incorporate Microsoft's 'Photosynth'  which means stitching a large collection of images and turning them into a 3D view so that it is viewable from any angle. This photo stitching technology is not out in the market yet and is still under research. Many other research papers of Microsoft has also been implemented in this fiction from time to time.

CSI may be a fiction, but the core technology is real- says Zuiker.

Zuiker makes regular visit to the Microsoft's research labs in Redmond, Washington to keep in track of whats going on in there. No doubt, this partnership of CSI with Microsoft proves to be priceless for the CSI crew.

Zuiker says that he will keep implementing new technologies of Microsoft which he think is interesting.

Microsoft's vision

For the first time in its 23-year history as a public company, Microsoft's quarterly revenue has fallen from the previous year: profits have dived 32%.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer speaks during a forum on the future of computing in Cologne, western Germany, Friday, April 24, 2009

Microsoft faces challenges from competitors such as Apple and Google

In January, Microsoft said it needed to resort to its first mass lay-offs, cutting 5,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, the long-running row with the European Union over alleged anti-competitive practices rumbles on.

A new version of Windows, called Windows 7, is on its way to replace Vista.

World Update's Dan Damon asked Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer if the economic downturn was making life difficult.

You can listen to the Steve Ballmers speech about the Microsoft Vision for the future in this link..

Windows 8 – 2011?

I get questions periodically about whether Windows 7 marks the end of the Microsoft operating system road.

Some users wonder whether will MicrosoWindows 8ft’s next version of Windows be completely cloud-based?

No and no. The bottom line: Windows isn’t done when Windows 7 is released to manufacturing (most likely in late fall 2009).Windows 8 has been on the drawing board/planning stages for a while now.

nd as the “Codename Windows” blog recently reported, Microsoft is starting to hire developers specifically for Windows 8.

Codename Windows highlighted last week a Microsoft job posting from April 14, seeking someone to help with the next generation of the Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) storage technology inside the next version of Windows:

“For the upcoming version of Windows, new critical features are being worked on including cluster support and support for one way replication. The core engine is also being reworked to provide dramatic performance improvements. We will also soon be starting major improvements for Windows 8 where we will be including innovative features which will revolutionize file access in branch offices.”

There’s another Windows 8 job posting from April 16 that focuses on Windows 8 Server (a k a Windows Server 2011 or whatever it ends up being called). It’s for another job focused on the Windows file system:

“In Windows Server 2008 R2 release, the Server UX Test team (under the File Server Management organization) is finalizing the MMC [Microsoft Management Console] based User experience (UX)/Interfaces for the File Server Role. Currently the team owns DFS [Distributed File System] Management, Share and Storage Management, FSRM [File Server Resource Manager] & Classification UI, Disk Management, SMFS. For Windows 8, the SSD organization is working on the next version of the file server.

“As the team moved to Windows 8, you will have 2 main responsibilities - (i) put on the customer/design critique hat as we plan our next version file server management experience (i) participating in the architectural design, and development and driving automated testing for managing the next generation file server. Our current automation does not meet the multi-machine paradigm requirement and so you will contribute significantly in the development of test automation to validate setup/configuration of the new server, managing configuration changes, performing diagnostics and reporting using Power Shell, Command line, Object Model, UI.”

If Microsoft sticks to the kind of schedule to which it has adhered with Windows 7, Windows 8 will be released around 2011 (with Microsoft publicly promising a 2012 delivery target). While it’s way too early to speculate what kinds of features will be in it, it definitely is in the works….

Any early requests for features/functionality you’re hoping makes it into Windows 8 client and server?

Hi SriRam (Star)! I will write the email address directly like xyz@gmail.com and ask visitors to contact me.So,why to add these clickable links like"Email me" ?

There are plenty of problems if you show your email address directly on your site as SPAMMERS find your email address easily via search engines, and other sources.

So,by adding this type of links will hide your email address and If your visitors want to contact you, they will click on it.If the visitor want to sent to you via another source like yahoo,Google, etc they will simply copy the email address(in the outlook express) and email you.

On clicking the links,WINDOWS OUTLOOK EXPRESS will be open by default.

So,how to add the "Email me" link?
There are two types of ways to do it.One is Text link and another one is Image link.

Text Link:
Suppose, your email id is Kiruba@gmail.com ,here is the code you have to add

<a href="mailto:Kiruba@gmail.com">Email me </a>

Don't forget to change the email address in the above code to your's.If you want another anchor text(not "Email me"),you can change it.

Suppose,if you want the visitors to email you by clicking on an image like the below one

Email me

First you have to upload your picture to some hosting service like Picasa and photo bucket.hey will give a direct link for the uploaded image.Take a note of it.

<ahref="mailto:abc@gmail.com"><img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc286

/7kranthiswaroop/thenvelope.gif" alt="Email me" width="120" height="57" border="0" /></a>

Where to paste this code in your blogger(blogspot) blog?

Sign into your blogger dashboard>layout>add a page element>html/javascript and Paste the code and save the changes.

That's it!

Oracle Bid for Sun is $9.50 a share

Business software maker Oracle Corp. said Monday itOracle sun has entered into a definitive agreement to buy server builder Sun Microsystems in a deal worth $7.4 billion.

Oracle (ORCL, Fortune 500) said it will buy Sun (JAVA, Fortune 500) common stock for $9.50 per share in cash, a 42% premium from Friday's closing price of $6.69.

After accounting for Sun's cash and debt, the deal's value is $5.6 billion, the companies said.

The Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle said it expects Sun to contribute over $1.5 billion to its operating profit this year, and over $2 billion in the second year.

On a per share basis, Oracle expects Sun "to be accretive" to its adjusted earnings by at least 15 cents in the first full year after closing. The deal is expected to close this summer, Oracle said.

The announcement comes after Sun reportedly rejected a $7 billion buyout offer from IBM (IBM, Fortune 500) earlier this month.

"The acquisition of Sun transforms the IT industry," said Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison, in a statement. "Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up."

Oracle said it sees "strategic customer advantages" to owning two of Sun's most popular software products: the programming language Java and the Solaris operating system.

"This is a fantastic day for Sun's customers, developers, partners and employees across the globe," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's chief executive. "Joining forces with the global leader in enterprise software to drive innovation and value across every aspect of the technology marketplace."

The deal is subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

How to Erase Unwanted objects from Photos using Microsoft Digital Suite 2006 Editor.

You’ve got the perfect picture…except for that one chair, arm, ex you no longer talk to. Whatever it is, get your perfect picture back by removing unwanted objects with photo editing software.

Note

Before you edit your digital photos, it's a good idea to make a copy of the original image and make your edits to that copy. This way, you preserve the original image in case you need to go back to it.

Step 1

Open your photo in Microsoft Digital Suite 2006 Editor.

Step 2

If the Common Tasks pane is not open, click Common Tasks.

Step 3

In Common Tasks, in Touchup, click Smart Erase.

Step 4

Click and drag a loose outline around the first object you want to remove, and then click the starting point to complete the outline. When you've closed the outline around the object, the pointer will change from a cross hair to a cross hair with a small black box in the center. This indicates that the selection is complete.

Step 5

To add to an existing outline or to outline multiple areas in your photo using the Smart Erase tool, hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard as you make each selection.

You can also remove parts of a selection by holding the ALT key on your keyboard and using your mouse to select the area that you want to remove from a selection.

Step 6

After you've finished selecting the objects that you want to remove, in the Smart Erase task pane, click Fill in.

Step 7 (Optional)

If you don't get the results you hoped for, do one of the following, and then experiment until you get just the right look:

  • To start all over from the beginning and undo all of your changes, in the Smart Erase task pane, click Reset.
  • To go back in your changes one step at a time, in the Smart Erase task pane, click Undo last action.
Step 8

Click Done.

Step 9

On the File menu, click Save or Save As to save your edited picture.

SMS used to hijack a phone

Be careful who you give your Mobile Phone number out to. An attacker with the right toolkits and skill could hijack your phone remotely just by sending SMS messages to it, according to mobile security firm Trust Digital.

SMSAttack

In the Trust Digital demo on YouTube, an attacker sends an SMS message to the victim phone (on the left) which opens up a Web browser and downloads an executable file that directs it to send an SMS to the attacker's phone (on the right).

(Credit: Trust Digital)

In what it calls a "Midnight Raid Attack" because it would be most effective when a victim is asleep, an attacker could send a text message to a phone that would automatically start up a Web browser and direct the phone to a malicious Web site, said Dan Dearing, vice president of marketing at Trust Digital. The Web site could then download an executable file on the mobile phone that steals data off the phone, he said.

Dearing demonstrates how this can be done in a video on YouTube.

In another type of attack, an attacker could hijack a phone by sending a type of SMS message called a control message over the GSM network to a victim's phone that is using a WI-FI

network and then use special toolkits to sniff the Wifi traffic looking for the victim's Email log-in information. This attack is explained in another YouTube video.

While the attacks at this point are proof-of-concepts, they could be done if someone has the requisite knowledge and toolkits, said Dearing. Trust Digital recently announced software called EMM 8.0 that can help organizations protect employee phones from these types of attacks, he said.

"This is a completely real threat," said Philippe Winthrop, a director in the global wireless practice at Strategy Analytics. "We will see these attacks. It's a matter of time."

Giving presentations in front of people can be nerve-racking. Take some of the stress off with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007. Combine graphics, photos, and audio and video clips easily. An eye-catching, well-prepared presentation can help you overcome your public-speaking anxiety.

Best tweets for Microsoft's MVP Summit

So far, I have resisted the siren call of Twitter. But I love Twitter search — especially when a tweet-happy Microsoft group is posting up a storm.

Mvp

Microsoft’s (more or less) annual summit for its Most Valuable Professionals  (MVPs) is happening this week. And like lots of other reporters and bloggers, I’m keeping up vicariously via the Twitter streams.

MVPs are Microsoft’s volunteer army of product and technology experts. This week, about 1,500 of them are in the Seattle/Redmond area to meet, greet and get debriefed.

Microsoft officials are really trying to crack down on MVPs who are flouting their NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) this year. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t entertainment value in what is (and isn’t) being tweeted.

Here are my 10 favorite tweets from it (so far). Some are about products; some are about people. And some are just funny for those of us who know the MVPs and product manages who love (and curse) them.

In no particular order (and with no credit to the twits who said them, so as to keep various folks out of trouble):

  • QA session with Win7 Media Center team. 6 MVPs, 22 team members . . . Lots of questions and answers. some good.
  • Vs2010 slowly gets the RAD-Comfort of what Visual FoxPro had since 12 years! Codename Kitty Hawk works like Visual Extend Framework
  • Code Contracts was born from Spec#. It escaped from the lab and it’s wreaking havoc in the village. :)
  • Judging from the hair color… Visual C++ is old man’s game now.
  • MVP Summit Live search update will be discussed in Steve Balmers Speech on Wednesday
  • New Term at #MVP09 “Draggie Droppie Thingie”
  • Picture #MVP09 to be like DBAs Gone Wild only without all showing of t**s (well, except for @SQLBoyWonder of course.)
  • The “Online Nudity” teleprompter goof pic: http://tinyurl.com/at3ogg (expand) (this was really funny)
  • HELP!! The Microsoft censors are chasing me with a rattan cane!!!
  • Would love if slides don’t use red and green to differentiate. Partially color blind guys like myself can’t see the differences

Have You Nominated Yourself for MVP !!

Taking Better Photos

Anyone can point and click. But with a little consideration for framing, perspective, angles, etc., you can make an ordinary moment more dramatic. Good photo composition is just a few simple guidelines away.

Rule of thirds

First, learn the rule of thirds. As you look through your camera's viewfinder, imagine there are lines dividing the image into thirds, both horizontally and vertically, essentially dividing your image into nine equal-shaped blocks. Frame your subject at one of the intersection points instead of in the center of the viewfinder, as shown in the following illustration.

Now, with this said, many photographers make a very good living breaking this rule, but your photography will become much more interesting and visually stimulating if you use the rule of thirds when framing your subjects.

Framing

Careful framing of your subject can make a dramatic difference in your photos. Remember—every photo has a foreground and background, so use them together to add an interesting element to the shot.

Use foreground elements to frame your photo's subject. Architectural elements work well (windows, doorways, arches, and so on), but you can find any number of interesting elements to use for framing your photos. The important point here is the subject. It doesn't do much good to frame your subject with interesting elements if they overshadow the subject, making it difficult to determine what the subject is supposed to be.

Visual Cropping

Crop your photos visually before you take them. Look into the corners of the viewfinder. Do you see things that shouldn't be there? You can remove, or crop, these elements from your photos simply by moving closer to your subject, zooming in on your subject, or moving your subject within the viewfinder. Try different angles. Look for anything that will diminish the impact of unwanted objects in your photos.

Angle of the view

Believe it or not, the best angle for a photo is not always upright and directly in front of the subject. Some of the most interesting photographs are those taken from a unique vantage point. Get down to the level of the flowers before taking the picture. Climb a tree to take a picture of a meadow. Always ask yourself if the photo would look better taken as a landscape or portrait shot. Experiment and try different perspectives. Look for angles that are interesting and demonstrate the mood and inspiration you're trying to capture.

Balance

Achieving good balance in your photographs requires the correct combination of colors, shapes, and areas of light and dark that complement one another. Achieving the right balance in your photos is easier than it appears. Think about your subject and capture it from an angle, viewpoint, or even time of day that focuses attention on the subject.

Perspective

To capture the essence of what you experience when viewing a scene, it helps to add an element to your photo to convey this perspective. In the following picture, the bow of the boat helps to add an interesting perspective to the vastness of the scene. Without the bow of the boat in the picture, the scene would be far less interesting and void of any drama.

Draw the viewer's eyes through the photo

A path, a row of telephone poles, or even a line of chairs at the beach can serve as elements in a good photo.
