New Gmail Error

Trouble grabbing your mail this morning? Google says Gmail's web interface is unavailable to an uncannily familiar "small subset of users." They officially recommend accessing Gmail through an IMAP mail client, among other ways to access Gmail when it's down.

Around 7:20am Pacific time this morning, I noticed Gmail offering a message about being unable to grab my contacts, as shown above (skinned with the Helvetimail script). A friend in Florida sent an SMS wondering what was happening at 10:40, and a few tweets and Facebook messages confirm it's at least a diverse "subset of users" having problems.

Google's Apps Status Dashboard states that an update will be issued by 8:29 Pacific time with more details, and reminds us that Gmail can still be accessed by IMAP clients, as it was the last time this happened. Need a primer on setting up your desktop or smartphone with IMAP? Here's Google's step-by-step instructions.
